To do a checkered pattern with the Armor Granite Garage Epoxy kit, you need to first prime the floor, then tape the grid pattern in with good painter's tape in the width you would like. The tape will act as your grout lines. You can use the same color primer as your base epoxy color or choose a different color if you want. Once the primer dries, you apply the epoxy into each square and then apply the flakes. You can use the same flake pattern in all the squares or use different flake pattern/colors in alternating squares. See Pattern 5 on the Armor Granite product page. Let the epoxy dry overnight, then pull the tape up, exposing the primer as your grout lines, and then give the flakes a quick scrape to remove any loose ones and apply the topcoat.
