For deeper cracks, you can use a foam backer rod to fill the void before applying the mortar on top. Foam backer rods are flexible foam strips that help support the mortar in deep cracks, making repairs more effective and reducing material usage. Compacted sand can be used also. Multiple 1" layers can be applied to form a thicker repair, although 1" is all that's needed for even the heaviest duty repairs.
